Tree Council CEO and avid reader, Sara Lom, discusses literature, creativity and trees with naturalist, writer and campaigner Dr Amy-Jane Beer and multi-award winning author, Wyl Menmuir. Drawing on their guests’ own explorations of the natural world, this talk will look at how the arts can highlight the social and cultural value of trees, creativity as environmentalism, and how prose can capture and inspire tangible experiences with trees and nature.
About Amy-Jane Beer:
Dr Amy-Jane Beer is a biologist turned naturalist and writer. She has worked for more than 20 years as a science writer and editor, contributing to more than 40 books on natural history. She is currently a Country Diarist for The Guardian, a columnist for British Wildlife and a feature writer for BBC Wildlife magazine, among others. She campaigns for the equality of access to nature and collaboration between farming and conservation sectors. Her book The Flow won the 2023 James Cropper Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing.
About Wyl Menmuir:
Wyl Menmuir is a multi-award winning author based in Cornwall. His 2016 debut novel, The Many was longlisted for the Booker Award and was an Observer Best Fiction of the year pick. Wyl’s first full-length non fiction book, The Draw of the Sea, won the Roger Deakin Award from the Society of Authors and a Holyer an Gof Award. A former journalist, Wyl has written for Radio 4, The Guardian and The Observer. He is a course leader for Curtis Brown Creative, co-creator of the Cornish writing centre, The Writers’ Block and is a senior lecturer in creative writing at Falmouth University. His second non fiction book, The Heart of The Woods, was released in 2024.
