'What's the Point of COP?': Youth Climate Workshop & Panel Discussion

‘What’s the Point of COP?’: Youth Climate Workshop & Panel Discussion - Exploring the Role of Young People in Global Climate Policy

Join Young Friends of the Earth on November 13th, 2024 from 6PM, at Maharry Theatre, TCD, Dublin, Ireland for a collaborative event hosted by Friends of the Earth Ireland, and TCD Environmental and Politics societies. This event will focus on the role of young people in shaping international climate decisions, with a particular emphasis on the Conference of Parties (COP).

‘What’s the point of COP?’ will critically assess COP’s purpose and whether it makes sense for youth activists to engage with this global process.

The event will feature a panel discussion with speakers including:

Nathan Hutchinson Edgar: A recent graduate of TCD with first-class honours in Environmental Science and the outgoing Environmental Officer of TCD’s Student Union. He has campaigned for sustainable initiatives on campus, worked with groups like Extinction Rebellion and Young Friends of the Earth Ireland, and supported the development of TCD’s Education for Sustainable Development strategy.

Dearbhla Richardson: Ireland Campaign Consultant for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, a global effort aimed at phasing out fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to renewable energy. She works on mobilising people around challenging fossil fuel development nationally and internationally.

Dr. Silvia Caldararu: Silvia studies how plants are affected by climate change and how this in turn impacts the world’s carbon cycle and feeds back to the climate. She uses land surface models to understand current plant and ecosystem observations and make predictions about the future.

A live report back from Baku, featuring a youth activist attending the COP delegations this time.

In a workshop segment, attendees will have the chance to discuss the direction of the youth climate movement and how we can strategically navigate global climate challenges.
