Meet the Speakers:
Dr. Gemma Connell
Youth Engagement Lead | Ocean Generation
Dr Gemma Connell runs our Wavemaker programme across the UK and beyond. Prior to joining Ocean Generation, Gemma spent 15 years in the performing arts industry as a choreographer, theatre maker and producer before switching to a career in science communication. Despite working for an Ocean charity, she’s not a very strong swimmer but is a little bit obsessed with sting rays!
Jo Ruxton
Founder | Ocean Generation
Jo Ruxton is the Founder of Ocean Generation, she brings a wealth of experience to our team. As a former BBC Natural History Unit underwater wildlife Producer she has dived around the world and encountered amazing wildlife from the equator to the poles, with sharks being her absolute favourites. Her conservation career began in Hong Kong where she started the first marine programme for WWF and helped establish the first 4 Marine Protected Areas there. She was the Producer of the multi-award-winning documentary A Plastic Ocean and in 2022 was awarded the MBE for her services to marine conservation. Jo’s happy place is definitely in the ocean and never more happy than when swimming in the cold waters close to her home in Cornwall.
